currently working with a bunch of people who, nice enough, believe in the ENGLISH race, its monarchy, its bloodline but without having the vaguest notion of what being 'english' really is.

did you know that when you dna test someone like me (great, great grandparents all east end londoners)that 95% of so called london brits have black or brown dna?
england is a bastard nation in that it is no more pure race than america.
I'm English and I've always believed Englishness has more to do with good manners and polite understanding than your DNA sequence.
I work in customer services, and the majority of people I speak to are white, middle class and extremely ill-mannered. Many of them are pig ignorant as well. Small wonder that many of them also harbour racist views.
A woman who sits next to me talks endlessly about how if "they" come to England, "they" need to make a "worthwhile contribution" to society. She is also white, at least four stone overweight, works only two days a week and her grammar and spelling is atrocious.
The other day I told her that if I ever heard her speak again, I would vomit on her.

Feel free to pick on anything at all I type, as I make so many errors...my diction when spoken is awful, my spelling without word - abysmal, and generally I murder the English language every time I use it.
Oh, and I agree about your view of being English, manners etc, but also a certain arrogant superiority, which may be veiled but is ready to whip out and be used at short notice.
As for London, isn’t it safe to say it’s our own little America?
